Pontarolo Engineering, the inventors of the Cupolex Product have been marketing Cupolex worldwide since 1990. The technical objective of Pontarolo Engineering was to produce an aerated floor forming system for concrete slab construction which would create a cutting- edge mitigation system to protect occupied buildings from soil vapor intrusion, sustain concrete floors even in swelling and challenging soil conditions, and sustain heavy loads. The innovation of the ancillary products Pontex, Beton Stop and Rialto were introduced to the Cupolex system to advance the aerated floor technology further. Cupolex has revolutionized the conventional application of concrete slab construction by reducing the amount of excavation, eliminating the need of vapor barriers and liners, reduce or eliminating the need for imported materials, aggregates or engineered sub-grade, reducing the amount of concrete consumption and reducing labour costs.

The Cupolex® cutting edge concrete slab solution provides major advantages over a standard slab on grade:

• Provides an excellent moisture barrier under slab with a void that can be vented in soil with high  water content or salinity.
•Water cannot leach up through the bottom of the concrete slab significantly protecting the structure from water damage and improving internal air quality.
• Moisture cannot wick through the concrete thereby ensuring the top and bottom of the concrete foundation remain dry. This eliminates the concrete slab as a possible source of moisture transference to under flooring overlays and prevents damage to expensive architectural flooring finishes, floor tiles or carpets.
• Ventilating the Cupolex® under slab void space will effectively help control vapour intrusion, humidity levels, and temperature ranges, that standard slabs cannot control.
• Replaces fill or gravel that typically is required to bring the slab to the finished grade level and eliminates the costs associated with importing, compacting and certifying engineered fill. This also reduces any risk with post construction settlement of the underlying sub-base.
• Longer spans can be achieved in pile/beam structural slabs than with flat standard slabs.
• Assists designers to deliver sustainable features that contribute to GREEN and LEED certified building.
• Maximum control of concrete curing resulting in a reduction of slab curling and shrinkage cracks while providing a higher quality surface.

Because of its unique flexible arrangement and compatibility, piping systems and additional supports can be easily configured through or around CUPOLEX. It also means services can be contained within the doming system, and don't have to take up unnecessary space above ground.

Typically, the larger the foundation, the cheaper CUPOLEX is compared to alternatives. For example, CUPOLEX materials on this site came in on only 8 pallets in total, A Polystyrene foundation of this size would have required 4 Truck & Trailer units.

The unique forming properties of the cupolex dome design transmit the natural stresses evenly across the foundation. A CUPOLEX foundation is designed in the most economical way in order to save waste, time, and materials.

US Air Force Bases require a Vapour Mitigation System to be installed. Cupolex has been military specified and is a Vapour Mitigation System of choice, for a number of the US bases around the world.

CUPOLEX® is a patented forming system for concrete slab foundations made from 100% recycled plastic. Concrete is poured over the modular dome forms to create a floating or structural concrete slab. The below slab void that results, minimizes concrete contact with the soil, while providing a capillary barrier against moisture - yet uses less concrete and rebar than a standard slab with equivalent load bearing capacity.
